Love is Patient, Love is Kind
Many times artists write
songs about topics that they want to discuss with the public. Topics in which
many times are about issues that either are occurring in the artists lives now
or have been an issue to them in their past and they want to express their
feelings to the listeners and youth. Macklemore is known as one of these
artists whose songs always have meanings within the lyrics and always has something
they want to share with the viewers to understand them better. And in their hit
song “Same Love” also written by Ryan Lewis, their lyrics talk about sexuality,
religion, and violence.
In “Same Love” Macklemore
and Ryan Lewis discuss the main topic of sexuality throughout their song. The
song was written to discuss the topic of a relationship that involves two same
sex partners trying to get society to accept them as one. He begins his song as
talking about how he had always been used to having a gay uncle and “had a pre-conceived
idea of what it all meant”. In his song he sang about always knowing his uncle
was gay and that as he got older he was shown more and more hardships his uncle
was faced with, with having a same sex relationship. Just because of his
sexuality and his love for another man he was judged on a regular basis and
persecuted for not being like everyone else. Macklemore writes in his chorus
which I think stands his ground on sexuality in the public now, that someone shouldn’t
be judged or hated just because of who they are attracted to. “And I can’t
change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to, I can’t change.” With his lyrics
he is showing that someone in a same sex relationship cannot change who they
are or who they do love, and the fact that it has taken society so long to
accept them.
Another topic that
Macklemore incorporates into his song “Same Love” is religion. Throughout his
song he talks about how many times religious people will talk about same sex
relationships and look down upon them for going against God’s teachings, many
are filled with misunderstandings. In “Same Love” Macklemore writes “And you
could be cured with some treatments and religion” thinking that if those in same
sex relationships had just incorporated more religion in their lives that they
would be “cured” in the eyes of society. Another lyric Macklemore wrote in his
song which coincides with Religion “And God loves all his children, is somehow
forgotten but we paraphrased a book written 3,500 years ago.” The fact that most
of society sees same sex relationships as sinful and against Gods teaching but
yet they never bring up the fact that God is always understanding and passionate
about his creations.
Violence was used
throughout his lyrics in “Same Love” to get the point across that just because
two people who are the same gender love each other it has gotten to the point
where violence has taken over many people’s reactions. He talks about how the
fight for equality in marriage is parallel to the fight for equality of race on
his lyrics “it’s the same hate that’s caused wars from religion, Gender and
skin color, The completion of your pigment, the same fight that lead people to
walk-outs and sit-ins” Violence has been the go to way to getting your point
across since the dawn of time, Macklemores words makes most people stop and
rethink their ways of arguing, although it hasn’t stopped as many as he had
hoped. In “Same Love” he sings about how violence just isn’t face to face anymore,
most of the time it is discussed online where people will say the rudest
comments just to make others feel worse about themselves. “Call each other faggots Behind the keys of a message board A word
rooted in hate” many times people tend to write hurtful and cruel things just
to get points across that they feel and are taught to be correct. Macklemore
writes many compelling lyrics about how no one should be hated or discriminated
just because of who they decided to love and care about. Love is something to
hold on to and to cherish and the fact that many times the outcome is with
violence really should open up the eyes of society. Macklemore also speaks
about how the online bullying and self hate has gotten so out of hand “Kids are
walkin’ around the hallway, Plagued by pain in their hearts, A world so
hateful, Someone would rather die, than be who they are.” We are in a generation where society has taken a stand on
something that so many people before us would never even speak of in their homes,
let alone in a public forum. Macklemore’s song opened a door for everyone to be
allowed to have their own opinion and to share that with others, we should all
be accepting of everyone’s thoughts instead of shutting them down because it
might not be how we feel on the matter.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ song “Same
Love” was a huge hit not just because of its catchy chorus or its background
music. The popularity came from the messages they wrote in the lyrics for the
audiences and fans. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis wrote a song that was both
compelling and filled with messages about same sex relationships. Not only did
they discuss their own experiences with the main topic but they also talked
about how same sex relationships were affected by religion, sexuality, and
violence. I think that this song really talks about the everyday struggle that
many people don’t even think about when coming to same sex relationships. And
that were in a generation where we don’t think twice about the things we say
and the things we do to other people on social Medias or in the real world, and
this opened up many discussion about how society is working these days.
